The moon didn't seem to show any pity on us as we sped our way in and out of pitch-black alleyways and dark corners. As in "we," I meant me, Daniel, and uh, you-know-who. Jeff held on tight to my wrist leading me to wherever we were going as I barely managed to carry Daniel with the other. Other than our footsteps, all was dead quiet. Fianlly, we stopped at one of those houses on the far shadowed edge of the neighborhood. You know, the one that blends in so well with the ominous-looking forest behind that you almost miss it when driving by. Jeff literally kicked the door open and pushed me inside. The place was a mess. The bloodied wooden floor was littered with a few empty (or almost empty) whiskey bottles and cigarette buds that gave off a murky tabacco sent that almost made me gag. Another smell of decomposing flesh filled the air, as if someone had died in here (which I have no doubt) and was neglected to be buried. On the walls hung pictures with cherished memories of family and friends that would be no more. This must've been the place that belonged to a family before Jeff had brutally slaughtered them.

"What are you going to do to us?" I asked in a casual tone. I wouldn't let Jeff think I was afraid, though I had tons of fear for my child's life.

Jeff shot me a sly glare and chuckled for a second.

"Don't act so stupid Jane, I'm gonna be a father to my kid!"

I tried to hold back, but I couldn't help but laugh. This had to be some sort of joke. Jeff didn't even know how to be human, nevertheless a father.

"What makes you think that's gonna happen?!" I teased.

Jeff's glare turned serious as he grabbed Daniel from my arms.

"This," he answered as he brushed the babe's dark hair out of his eyes, "Remember dear that he's my kid as well as your's like I said before. If you ever try to take him I will track you down so fast that you won't even remember leaving. And let's just say that I won't be as nice to you then as I am now."

I nodded my head. Jeff had finally won my attention there, but I still didn't have a clear picture of what he was going to do. Seeming content, he carefully laid Daniel back in my arms, then grabbed my wrist again and lead me down the hallway and into a small room with a queen-sized bed laying against the wall. This must've been the parent's room, how ironic.

"Go to.....just sleep," Jeff let go of my wrist and I reluctantly laid Daniel against one of the pillows but I remained standing. I wasn't tired. (Who could blame me after I had just woken up from what?,two days of sleeping in a hospital bed?)

"I'm not tired."

"SLEEP!" he growled.

"No," I stood steadfast. If Jeff was going to try his hand at parenting with me, I wasn't going to let him think it would be a piece of cake. I was going to make life hard for him. And maybe if he had enough sense he would let me and Daniel go.

"You're not tired?!" Jeff then pulled out a steak knife from his hoodie's front pocket and held the point to my throat threateningly, "What about now?! Are you tired NOW?"

I quickly thought of just climbing on the bed and avoiding the trouble of a slit throat but then reconsidered. He wasn't going to get rid of me! If he did, I'd like to see him try to nurse the kid. I crossed my arms and smiled "No."

Jeff's eyes widened more than they already were in rage. I could tell he was ticked. But instead of sliced my neck, he returned the knife to his pocket.
"Fine! Just stand there for all I care!"

I did just that.

Jeff paused and stared at me for a moment, probably contemplating what a mess he had gotten himself into then let out a small giggle from that mouth of his.

"Gosh Jane...you sure are one heck of a girl."

I let out a short laugh as well.

"I don't suppose you're getting any sleep tonight."

"Who me?" Jeff questioned, "Ha! I haven't slept in five years!!" and with that he left the room and closed the door behind him probably locked it.

Gosh, I hated that man.

Mom and Dad wouldn't always fight. But when they did, it was brutal. Like a few months ago. Mom baked me a cake to celebrate my tenth birthday but it came out half burned. When dad tried it he asked Mom why she couldn't ba
